Hockey

The State Netball Hockey Centre’s hockey facilities were built to comply with regulations and standards set in place by the International Hockey Federation (FIH). The FIH recognises venues that are of a standard to host international competitions.

The key features are two Class A International Standard wet pitches, which are made of artificial grass. The main pitch (S1) is the premier hockey pitch in Victoria, with an undercover grandstand that caters for 1000 spectators. The second pitch (S2) has a longer playing area to allow for Lacrosse and a hockey warm up area, and has a grandstand that caters for 250 spectators.

SNHC is the home of Victorian hockey and, as such, is a training and match venue for the Victorian Institute of Sport, including the Victorian Men and Women’s teams that compete in the National Hockey League. SNHC also hosts Victorian State League Matches, regular competition and training.

Both pitches have a built in irrigation system that is programmed through a control panel in the Ground Manager’s Office. This irrigation system utilises recycled water, with the State Netball Hockey Centre being the first hockey stadium in the world to introduce such a system. The pitches are watered to reduce surface friction preventing injuries and helping to minimise the ball bouncing along the pitch, which results in better quality play and a decrease in the wear of the pitch surface.

The amenities for players and officials are located on Level 0 of the complex, with eight player change rooms, and two separate change rooms for umpires. There is also a room for ball persons, a dedicated office for a tournament director, and a doping room.

The external grassed banks around pitch 1 and 2 are available to spectators, who can access them via the stairs at the city end of the grandstand or via the stairs leading from the balcony outside the café and bar.

The grandstand has 1000 undercover seats overlooking pitch 1, in addition to media facilities (two media commentary boxes and a television camera platform) and a viewing deck. The grandstand is serviced by a kiosk and patron amenities.

The Hockey Olympians Room has views of the Melbourne city skyline, as well as over pitch 1. It has a number of configurations, with a total capacity of up to 200 patrons. A permanent bar is located in the northwestern corner of the room, with a kitchenette adjacent to the bar.
