The State Netball Hockey Centre opened in January 2001, as the new home of netball and hockey in Victoria. At a cost of $27 million, the Centre was built on the site of the previously separate netball and hockey complexes in Royal Park, Melbourne. The complex was an important site for the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games hosting both the netball and hockey competitions.

The State Sport Centres Trust (SSCT) manages the centre, which is also the controlling body of the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre (MSAC) and the Melbourne School of Sport and Recreation Management (MSSRM).

The centre is also the administrative base for Hockey Victoria, while Netball Victoria has a satellite office within the complex, in addition to their head office in North Melbourne. The netball office is used to manage all netball events and competitions that take place at SNHC, with the weeknight competitions, except Wednesdays, managed by the Parkville Netball Association.
